This is one of the scariest things, the one that nightmares consist of – to be trapped in your own body, not being able to move and communicate, only to feel and think. Martin Pistorius has lived that nightmare for more than 12 years.

He grew up on South Africa, living a completely normal life. At an age of 12, he suddenly started losing the ability of moving and soon he found himself in a coma.

Doctor weren’t able to discover what the reason was and what was wrong with the boy. His brain hadn’t significant activity, so his parents were told that he will probably never wake up. After three years, Martin’s brain started to wake up, slowly at the beginning, and by the age of 19, Martin became completely aware of everything that was happening around him. Still, he couldn’t move yet.

Over the next few years Martin was prisoner in his own body, unable to move, speak, thus unable to inform someone that he is awake and aware and that he can hear and understand everything around. He was left with his own thoughts only, witnessing life instead of living it. He also witnessed his mother stating at a point that she wished he could find his own peace and finally pass away.

He was faced with strong negative feelings of despair and disaster and he mastered the skill to disengage his own thoughts. He was seeing solution in clearing his mind and having empty thoughts, so basically he started concealing into himself.

Eventually, the woman that was taking care of him at the hospital, Virna van der Walt, noticed that often he would react to things she would say. She told this to his parents and suggested that they take him for further examinations at the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

When he was taken there and tested, it was verified that Martin is conscious and he is even able to respond and communicate in a way. This happened when he had turned 25.

Martin used communication software and that was the point where his life has gained its sense again and he had a goal, so the healing processes, of his thoughts primarily, came out to be easier. He started breaking the limitations and completely integrated into the society and into the world in general. In 2008 Martin met a girl, Joanna, both of them fell in love and now they’re even married, since last year.

Martin described his life and his journey in a book and published it under the title ”Ghost boy”. Over the past few years the has regained the control of his head and arms to an extent, and now he can say that his life is not a living nightmare, and he can proudly go on retelling his life story, which is, no doubt, highly inspirational and motivational.
