Sports are an excellent thing for the physical and mental growth of an individual. Sports help in keeping the body active, which boosts the immune system to fight diseases. Sports generally involve vigorous exercises which keep the body in balance. However, some sports also have some dangers that are associated with them. Dr. Zachary K Perlman is an expert who deals with sports-related health conditions such as back pain, neck pain, nerve pain, and concussion, amongst others. If you are a sportsman and experience any of these pains, book an appointment with him.

Back Pain

Back pain generally occurs anywhere in the back region. The pain sometimes moves to the buttocks and top of the legs. The pain can be sharp and shooting, depending on the cause. The following symptoms commonly accompany back pain:

  • Numbness.
  • Tingling feeling in the leg region.
  • Pain that keeps worsening when you bend or twist.
  • Inflammation or swelling.

Neck Pain

Any pain that affects the neck is termed neck pain. The pain occurs in three distinctive ways:

Acute neck pain. Pain that does not last over four weeks. This type of pain has a clear cause and treatment; hence it is easier to handle.

Subacute neck pain. Pain that lasts between one to three months. Sometimes, the cause may not be clear, and treatment varies depending on the type of injury you encountered.

Chronic neck pain. Pain that lasts for more than three months. The pain is usually incurable but can be managed.

Neck pain is generally accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • Trouble in moving the head, even the neck.
  • A lot of headaches.
  • The neck also experiences some stiffness.
  • A stinging and stabbing pain may also be felt around the neck and head.
  • Pain moving slowly down the arm or the back.
  • Grip weakness.

Nerve Pain

Nerve pain is usually caused by an outside source, such as being hit or cut. The nerve sends a pain signal to the brain even when there is no cause of pain. This makes an individual experience severe nerve pain. The symptoms related to nerve pain include the following:

  • Some individuals may experience some kind of an electric shock.
  • Tingling feeling, which is experienced like a pin or needle injection.
  • There is also increased sensitivity.
  • Some may experience weakness in the limbs.
  • Others experience a burning sensation.

Concussion

This is a traumatic brain injury primarily caused by a blow or anything that shakes your head and neck. It is more common in sports that involve more physical interaction, such as football and rugby. The sudden movement of the head and neck causes a temporary chemical change in the brain, resulting in a momentarily altered mental state. A concussion is generally associated with symptoms such as:

  • A dizzy feeling.
  • Overwhelming headaches.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Confusion.
  • Loss of balance.
  • Nausea and excess vomiting.
  • Sensitivity to light and sound.

In conclusion, other pain-related conditions associated with sports include shoulder injuries, hip pain, and knee injuries. If you are a sportsperson and have the above conditions, you should visit the nearest hospital for more checkups.
