Are E-Cigarettes Bad or Effective Cessation Tools?
The hardest part about ditching the smoking habit is overcoming nicotine cravings. Some individuals have successfully quit smoking by their willpower while some have benefited from the use of smoking cessation products. Whatever the means applied, the goal is to put the habit of smoking behind you and lead a healthy lifestyle. Although controversial, e-cigarettes have been suggested as a smoking cessation aid and have proven successful in numerous cases. Below are things to consider to establish the effectiveness and safety of e-cigarettes.
The FDA does not approve e-cigarettes as a quit smoking aid. Various studies and research done on their effectiveness in helping smokers quit haven’t been satisfactory enough to earn approval. It is advised that you explore FDA-approved options such as nicotine replacement treatment commodities or other methods like behavioural therapy before considering vaping. E-cigarettes can be explored as an option if all other safe and reliable methods have proven unsuccessful.
An article published in the New England Journal of Medicine highlights the results of a study aimed at comparing vaping with conventional nicotine replacement approaches. A total of 886 adults attending the United Kingdom National Health Service for stop smoking services were randomly assigned nicotine replacement items of their preference for close to three months or an e-cig starter pack containing a refillable electronic cigarette and a bottle of nicotine e-juice. Companies like Epuffer purchase a variety of e-liquids to suit one’s flavour and strength preferences.
It was observed that the abstention rate was 18% for individuals in the e-cigarette group compared to 9.9% for the nicotine replacement crowd. For those who quit successfully, 80% of those assigned to vaping versus 9% of those using nicotine replacement remedy products were still using their assigned product at the 52-week mark. The study concluded that when accompanied by behavioural support, e-cigarettes were more effective for smoking cessation than nicotine replacement therapy. Although these results seem promising, scientists are still conducting more research to establish the safety of e-cigarettes as a reliable means to quit smoking.
Health and Safety
There are numerous safety concerns associated with vaping. Despite being considered safer than regular cigarettes, e-cigarettes still have various effects. The vapor inhaled is generated from the heating of nicotine, flavourings, and other substances and can cause nausea, coughing, and irritation of the mouth and throat. One can choose from a wide range of e-liquid options of varying nicotine levels, and this serves as both an advantage and disadvantage. Nicotine is addictive and poses many health risks, but the ability to choose the nicotine level serves as an advantage as a quitting aid. It is advised that one should gradually lower nicotine strengths until they can comfortably use zero-nicotine liquids if the goal is to quit smoking.
There has yet to be a lot of research conducted on the effects that e-cigarettes have on health and their usefulness as a smoking cessation product. Many studies have yielded positive results, but there are still concerns about the long-term effects of vaping. Nevertheless, quitting smoking is beneficial and lowers the risk of various serious diseases such as cancer and stroke, promoting general health and well-being.
