AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! This Additive Is In Almost All Products and It Causes Serious Digestion Problems
Even though extracted from seaweeds which are exceptionally healthy, the carrageenan used in modern food industry is refined and isolated. Studies have shown that this carrageenan is really hazardous.
A great number of additives which have become necessary in the food industry are hazardous and are linked to various health problems. One of these is carrageenan (E407) and that’s why we should pay some attention to it.
Carrageenan is a polysaccharide extracted from red seaweeds, particularly from the type called Irish moss. It resembles gelatin in its structure.
Because of its gel-like properties, it’s been used as an emulator and thickener for centuries. It has become actively used in the modern food industry as a thickener and emulator in the thirties of the 20th century.
You can find carrageenan in a great number of products as a stabilizer, emulator and thickener – in meat products, sauces, dressings, soups, desserts (cakes, puddings, chocolates, and jellies), marmalades, beer, and mustard. It is also found in soy milk, cream, yogurt, cheese, margarine, mayonnaise, ice-cream etc.
Besides in the food industry, it is also used for production of cosmetics (moisturizers, gels, shampoos etc.)
Even though extracted from seaweeds which are exceptionally healthy, the carrageenan used in modern food industry is refined and isolated. Studies have shown that this carrageenan is really hazardous.
After many years spent on researching this problem and 18 published studies on the topic of the perils of carrageenan, Joanne K. Tobacman, an excellent professor of clinical medicine at the Illinois University, School of Medicine in Chicago, has confirmed the link of carrageenan to many health problems.
“Research has shown that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation. By consuming processed food that contains this additive, we take in carrageenan in quantities sufficient to induce inflammation in our body. Chronic inflammation can lead to many diseases, including heart diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, intestinal inflammations, rheumatic arthritis, atherosclerosis and even cancer” – it is said in Alternative.
As a proof to this claim, J.K. Tobacman gives the fact that carrageenan itself is used in pharmaceutical industry for causing inflammation in tissues. According to her claims, carrageenan is especially destructive for the digestive tract.
It is also suspected that carrageenan can be responsible for diabetes, ulcer colitis, even cancer of the digestive tract, especially colon cancer.
On the basis of these notions, Joanne K. Tobacman, as well as many other scientists force FDA (the American agency for food and drugs) to ban the use of carrageenan in the food industry.
However, the FDA doesn’t approve the petitions and causes. According to them, there’s a lack of firm evidence that carrageenan is dangerous and thus they cannot forbid its use in the food industry by law.
