We all know how bad sugar can be for our body and our health in general, but what do you think would happen if you quit eating added sugar entirely for one year?

Her Family Stopped Eating Sugar for A Year, and This is What Happened

That’s exactly what Eve O. Schaub and her family did for her book “A Year of No Sugar: A Memoir”. In her article on Everydayhealth.com, she cited how she understood that sugar consumption was an everyday occurrence, and one that she gave little thought to. That was, until she started reading about the dangers of sugar consumption, and the devastating effects sugar has on health.

Eve decided to see if she and her family – her husband and her two children (6 and 11 years old) could totally exclude sugar from their diet. For a whole year, they avoided foods that contained added sugar – table sugar, honey, maple syrup, fruit juice, agave, food that was made with fake sugar and sugar alcohols. The only form of sugar they were taking in was in the form of fruit.

Very soon they saw the challenge they had taken. Sugar is in almost everything commercially produced. Almost every food manufacturer uses sugar to make food taste better. Eve and her family did not only have to avoid chocolate, cookies and cakes, but they also had to read labels of products like salad dressings, chicken broth, sausages, tortillas, soups and almost everything else you can imagine.

Eve says that she felt some changes, although subtle very quickly. By eliminating added sugar she started to feel more energetic. The true test was on her husband’s birthday: he asked for banana cream pie. The family deal was that they can eat one sugary treat per month during this one year, but they were naturally choosing not to indulge.

When Eve tried the multi-layered banana cream pie she felt that something has changed. She neither enjoyed it, nor had finished it, because it was too sweet for her. Her palate was not the same.  She says, “I knew something new was happening. Not only did I not enjoy my slice of pie, I couldn’t even finish it. It tasted sickly sweet to my now sensitive palate. It actually made my teeth hurt. My head began to pound and my heart began to race; I felt awful. It took a good hour lying on the couch holding my head before I began to recover. She simply did not feel well.

Now that she had entirely excluded sugar, she could feel the difference. Eve also looked back over the year and noticed that her daughters missed less school from being sick throughout the year. Eve’s “grand adventure”, as she calls it, of not eating sugar for a year changed the family’s perspective of sugar and its effects on their health. Her experiment is a shining example of what can happen if you choose to eat healthier, and remove things like sugar from your diet.
