Jo Irving is a self-proclaimed ‘tanorexic’ and she has sworn that she would never use a tanning bed in her life.

You probably wonder why. The reason behind this decision is the fact that she had gotten a skin cancer on her face thanks to this vain habit of hers.

Here’s What Happened To This Young Woman Who Went Tanning 5 Days A Week…

Irving had been using these tanning beds since she was only fourteen years old. Now she is thirty-two, and she has already got used to going to the salon very often, sometimes even for five times a week.

Irving explains how being brown had become a habit for her. She would not even go out at night if she had not had a tanning bed. Every time she went to a holiday and did not get the tan she had desired, she would be disappointed about the entire holiday. Her friends started using the word ‘tanorexia’ to describe her behavior since they, as well as herself, could never see her true skin color.

Irving was aware of the dangers of tanning. However, that did not stop her to go on with his habit of hers. In 2012, she got a ‘pearly white boil’ on her nose which would not go away. That is why she had to visit her doctor.

Her doctor, after seeing this boil, called it a ‘rodent ulcer’. He immediately told her to quit using the sunbeds.

After having the ulcer removed, Irving had a skin graft put in its place. She recalls the surgery and explains the awful sounds and smells she experienced during the surgery on her nose skin.

She says that she was under a local anesthetic, so she could only feel the tugging and pulling, but according to her, it is a terrible feeling. She has smelled her own flash burning and has heard every little thing, as it was behind her ear. The skin grafts failed to take, so she remained with a hole in her face for more than five weeks until it started healing.

Luckily, she is now completely recovered but claims that she will never use a tanning bed again in her life. She has even come to a conclusion, after looking at old pictures, that her brown skin had looked ridiculous.

She wants to spread the word about sunbeds and about their harmful effects. She wants to warn people and help them become aware that it is not just moles they should check, but other changes in their skin as well. She is not proud of her past related to the really frequent use of sunbeds and feels even embarrassed when she thinks of how young she has started practicing the tanning and how addicted she has become to it. Now, whenever she sees someone coming out of a sunbed salon she feels sick, because people do not realize how much harm that is going to do to them. She never thought that would happen to her, but it did, and feels bad about it.
