Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and wondered how you would stop the frown lines and wrinkles from appearing on your face. Wrinkles can make you lose your self-confidence and your beautiful glowing skin. If this is your current experience, your Pasadena Botox specialists can help refresh your appearance. Botox Cosmetic is an injectable wrinkle muscle relaxer that uses botulinum toxin type A to paralyze the muscles temporarily. This reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles and frowns.

What causes frown lines and wrinkles?

When you make facial expressions like frowning, laughing, and smiling, you use your facial muscles, which produce expression lines on your face. As your skin ages and loses its elasticity, those lines become frown lines. A combination of prolonged overactivity of your facial muscles and facial expressions produces wrinkles.

How does Botox Cosmetic work?

It contains a refined form of botulinum toxin, a substance that occurs in nature, and it causes paralysis. Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Because the injected muscles cannot contract, it makes wrinkles relax and soften.

How to prepare for the procedure

When you visit the clinic, your doctor can ask you if you have had any Botox injections within the past four months. Your doctor can also request to know if you are taking muscle relaxants, allergy medications, or sleeping aids.

Your doctor will advise you to stop taking blood thinners several days before your injection to avoid bleeding. If you take alcohol, you will be requested to stop 1 week before the procedure. Your doctor will also advise you not to take anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks before treatment to prevent bruising.

Pre-procedure preparations

Your doctor can request you to remove all your makeup and cleanse the treatment areas before the procedure. The procedure is not too uncomfortable, but your doctor can numb your skin.

What to expect during the procedure

The procedure is done in the out-patient, and it takes a few minutes.

Your doctor will use a thin needle to inject a tiny amount of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles.  Your doctor will inject you in the following areas of the face:

  • Wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as frown lines
  • Wrinkles around the eyes, known as crow’s feet
  • Horizontal creases in the forehead
  • Lines at the corners of the mouth
  • Skin on the chin

The number of injections needed depends on the extent of the area being treated.

What to expect after the procedure

Your doctor will recommend you not to massage or rub the treated areas for 24hours to help prevent the toxin from spreading to a different site.  Your doctor may also ask you to stay upright for four hours after the shots and take a day off from exercising. You can return to your normal activity after the procedure.

Results

You should see the effect of your treatment within 4-5 days of receiving your injections. These results will last for four months. Your doctor will recommend you visit the clinic three times a year to maintain the results.
