One Little Boy Will Lose 75% Of His Eyesight Because Of Small Toy That You Probably Have In Your Home
This case must serve as a warning to all parents in the world that laser pointers are not toys and they must not give them to their children. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports the case of a Tasmanian teenager who lost 75 percent of his eyesight playing with a laser pointer. The boy was playing with his laser point when the laser was pointed right in his eyes. Optometrists warn all parents from the world that this so called toy is pretty dangerous and harmful.
One of the dangers is permanent damage of the eyesight, and this is what exactly happened to the Australian teenager who played with the laser pointer. That is why the optometrists warned all parents to keep the laser pointer away from their children, since it is not a toy.
The fourteen-year-old boy who played with the laser pointer had started having problems with his eyesight and went to see optometrist Ben Armitage.
According to Armitage, the boy has come to see him on a Friday night and told him that he had irradiated his eyes with a laser pointer for a short period of time and therefore the laser pointer caused him to lose 75 percent of his vision in each eye.
As Armitage claims, there were laser burns in the back of the boy’s eyes on both sides; so in fact, he managed to burn the retina at the back of the eye close to an area called the macular.
At the very moment when the incident has happened, the boy did not feel any pain, but still, his eyesight was damaged almost immediately.
According to optometrist Ben Armitage, that is an area where your meticulous central vision happens and thus had somewhat of an exaggerated impact on how much vision he has lost.
What is worst, the boy’s vision cannot be improved or repaired by wearing glasses.
Armitage clarifies that the eye functions in a way that the most of your usable eyesight is central, like for instance the color vision, and it happens in a pretty tiny area. He also claimed that the damage done to the boy’s eyes is similar to a broken film camera, in that no matter the quality of the lens of the front, the damage to the sensor at the back cannot be cured.
The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health carried out a study, which revealed that even a 5 mW laser can cause harm, and those who are in the 3-5 mW range are not associated with eye damage. In the United States, the majority of the laser pointers follow these regulations, but still, some of them, those inappropriately imported, can go beyond these limitations for federal safety.
