The owner of Quaker Oats is being sued by the California and New York customers because of their allegation that their oatmeal contains traces of the pesticide glyphosate.

As a result, the ingredients of Quaker Oats Quick 10-Minute oatmeal were analyzed in an examination by an independent laboratory in California. The examination involved liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, a procedure frequently used by medical and chemical laboratories for drug research.

After the examination, it was discovered that the examined sample contained traces of glyphosate, and although this substance was discovered in lower amounts than the legal allowable limits, the company was sued for “false advertising”, or more precisely, for stating that their product is “100 percent natural”.

The answer of the Quaker Oats Company was that they did not use this substance in the oatmeal, so the traces of it found in their product were probably the result of the pesticides sprayed on the oats while they were grown by the farmers. In their declaration it was announced:

“Any amounts of glyphosate that may be found in our product are trace amounts and considerably below any limits which have been set by the EPA and are safe for human consumption.

This substance, or chemical, is an active ingredient in many pesticides, such as Roundup, which is being sprayed on crops all around the world. The use of this chemical has long been frowned upon by the food activists, who have claimed that it leads to serious health problems.

This pesticide is already well known, being produced in 1974 and regularly used since. Nevertheless, it was lately, in 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) put it into the category of “possible” cause of cancer.

Cancer is not the only health issue caused by this chemical, as it also contributes to numerous other long-term health issues.

Experts claim that the health problems caused by glyphosate are the result of its ability to interfere in the amounts of vitamin A, a vitamin essential for fetal development.

Moreover, other studies have discovered a strong link between the exposure of Roundup and Attention Deficit Disorder in farming communities, which is thought to be the result of the ability of glyphosates to disturb the function of the thyroid hormone.

Glyphosate is a substance that also impacts the production of serotonin in the body, thus impacting the sleep, the appetite, the mood, and contributing to depression. The use of pesticides and herbicides in oats is pretty common, so their traces in the products made of oats are pretty surprising.
