How to Grow an Unlimited Amount of Blueberries in Your Backyard!
You should definitely include blueberries in your diet as they are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Lately, it has been shown that blueberries help with brain function and memory loss.
In 2012 a study was conducted and it was revealed that just one serving of blueberries a week can help you slow down the process of cognitive decline. In 2013, another study was carried out that involved lab mice and that showed that the berries cleared toxic proteins that buildup in the brain.
It is not always easy to find fresh blueberries in the supermarkets, or they can be pretty expensive if you buy them out of season.
That is why we present you a helpful guide that will show you how to grow your own blueberries in just six easy steps.
1. Choose a nice planting spot and prepare your soil
The blueberry plant needs great amounts of sunlight and a lot of water, so you would need to choose a place that gets a lot of sunshine and has excellent drainage so you can constantly water them.
You should opt for raised beds, as they will drain better than regular soil.
It would be best if the space is about two and a half feet in diameter, and if each bush is a foot deep. Pre-moisten the peats and then plant them in the soil you want them to grow in.
Do not do this around cedar and redwood rind.
2. Give our blueberry bushes enough space
Blueberries require quite a lot of space to grow in, so you should plant the bushes at a distance of about 2 – 2.5 feet, or six feet space for one bush. If the bushes are planted in rows, make sure they are separated by 8 – 10 feet.
3. The planting process
The ideal time for planting blueberries is spring and fall, as these seasons provide the best conditions for them to thrive.
You are recommended to use nearly half an inch more planting soil than topsoil, and pack the soil around the root. Afterwards, add the rest of the soil. Right after the planting, water the bush with a lot of water and do not forget to continue watering it well and often.
The best mulching materials for the blueberry bushes are the sawdust, the grass clippings, the acid tripe, and the rind mulch. These bushes have shallow roots, meaning that it is important for them to get nutrients wherever they can.
You are recommended to use two to four inches of mulching material, which should be replaced every year,
Make sure you prune your bushes on a regular basis to ensure they grow strong and healthy. The dead shoots and flowers need to be clipped off.
Tips for pruning:
- Take a look at the blueberry bush and remove any growths from the bottom
- Clear the dead woods
- Remove the short and discolored branches by clipping them off
- Remove nearly half of the wood
When it comes to fertilization, you should use organic fertilizers for your blueberry bushes. Opt for blood meal and cottonseed. Do not use manure, because this type of fertilizer can damage the plant.
Follow the steps we just recommended and you will be on your way to a fresh crop of blueberries right in your own garden in the backyard.
